The influence of the PBL model with digital comic media on the critical thinking skills and learning outcomes of IPAS in elementary school students

Abstract

The low PISA 2022 score, which is below the standard, indicates that Indonesia's critical thinking skills are still low. Critical thinking skills are important because they can be applied in everyday life. This is also important in learning related to daily life, such as Natural Sciences and Social Sciences (IPAS), which are interdisciplinary in nature. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of the problem-based learning (PBL) model assisted by digital comic media on critical thinking skills and learning outcomes of students in elementary schools. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a posttest-only control group design using a population of all fourth-grade students in School Cluster 1, Pasrujambe District, Lumajang Regency, with a research sample of 50 fourth-grade students of SDN Pasrujambe 01. Class IVA served as the control group and Class IVB served as the experimental group, with 25 students in each class. The data were analyzed using an Independent Sample t-test with the analysis results showing a significance value (sig. 2-tailed) for critical thinking skills of 0.009 and for learning outcomes of 0.001 (both less than 0.05). These results indicate significant results between the control group and the experimental group in critical thinking skills and science learning outcomes. Thus, it can be concluded that the PBL model assisted by digital comic media has a significant influence on students' critical thinking skills and science learning outcomes.
