The influence of Professional Competence of teachers on the academic quality of Primary Schools

Basic education plays a key role in shaping the character and quality of human resources. As the initial stage of formal education, elementary school plays a strategic role in preparing students for the next level of education. This study aims to analyse and determine the effect of teacher professional competence, and to identify which dimension of teacher professional competence has the most significant effect on improving the academic performance of public elementary school students in the Bulu district of Rembang regency. This study employed a quantitative, correlational research approach. The study population comprised 156 teachers, with 118 teachers being selected at random using the proportional technique. Data were collected via closed questionnaires. The questionnaire instrument includes 25 statements based on the Likert scale and has been proven to be valid and reliable (Cronbach's α ≥ 0.7). The results showed that the questionnaire instrument was valid (R-count > 0.3) and reliable (Cronbach's alpha = 0.894). The data are normally distributed and there is a positive, significant relationship between teacher professional competence and school academic quality (r = 0.627, Sig. = 0.000). Regression analysis revealed that a one-unit increase in teacher competence improves academic quality by 8.52 points (R² = 0.393). The linearity test confirmed a linear relationship, showing that teacher professional competence has a significant effect on academic quality. This study concludes that teacher professional competence is a key factor in improving basic education quality. It is recommended that teacher training is strengthened, academic supervision is improved, and learning innovation is encouraged. Other variables, such as student motivation and leadership, should also be considered in future research.
