Effectiveness of Left-Handed Training on Topspin Accuracy in Right-Hand Dominant Table Tennis Players

Abstract

Background: Mastery of the forehand topspin is critical in table tennis, serving as a primary offensive stroke that influences match outcomes. However, young athletes often struggle with control and precision. Purpose: This study investigates whether training with the non-dominant limb (left hand) significantly enhances right-handed dominating players' forehand topspin performance.  Methods: One group pre-test and post-test were employed in a quasi-experimental design. Twenty male U-15 athletes from Club Hebat Semarang were selected through purposive sampling. Participants underwent 12 left-hand multiball training sessions over four weeks. Forehand topspin accuracy was measured pre- and post-intervention using a validated test instrument. Results: A significant improvement was observed in post-test scores compared to pre-test (mean score increase from 29.95 to 44.85, p < 0.001).  Implications and Recommendation: Left-hand multiball training proved effective in enhancing forehand topspin accuracy in right-dominant adolescent players. This supports the inclusion of non-dominant training in technical development programs
